Chapter Eleven

Liam reached the end of the aisle between rows of fabric, then turned and walked the length of the second level again. He’d walked it for two days now, demanding that his body find its former strength.

Each step he took caused an agonizing pain to shoot through him, but he didn’t have time to lay abed waiting for one of Gunner’s men to come after him. Nor did he have time to consider how much he missed Millie. Or how much his heart ached because she was gone.

When he reached the end of the aisle, he leaned against the wooden railing and lowered his head between his outstretched arms. His breaths were harsh and labored, but he’d accomplished more than he had the day before.

He opened his eyes, then lifted his head when he heard heavy footsteps approach. He knew he was in for another lecture.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing, Liam?”

“I’m building my strength, Blake, so when Gunner’s men come after me, I can at least hold my own for a while.”

“You don’t have to worry about Gunner’s men. I have guards posted all around the building. All you have to worry about is getting stronger without killing yourself in the process.”

“I’m fine, Blake. I appreciate your concern, but I’m fine.”

“You’re one of the most bullheaded blokes—”

“You’d be doing the same if the roles were reversed and you had to watch for Gunner over your shoulder,” Liam finished for him.

Blake let loose a laugh that came from deep in his belly.

“You’re right. Kind of you to point that out for me. Since I can tell it’s time for you to take a break, I’d like you to come with me. I have a couple of things I’d like to discuss with you.”

Blake turned and walked toward his office. Liam hobbled behind him and took the chair where he always sat when there was business to discuss.

Blake filled two glasses, one with whiskey, and one with brandy. Liam took the glass filled with whiskey. He didn’t know how Blake could tolerate drinking brandy, but that had always been his friend’s choice.

Liam took a swallow of his whiskey, then waited for Blake to get to the reason he wanted to talk to him.

“Millie’s coming back today.”

“What?”

“I wanted to warn you, since something has obviously happened between you and Millie. Am I right?”

Liam took a large swallow of his whiskey. “You’re not wrong.”

“Would you care to enlighten me as to what happened?”

“Not especially,” Liam said, “but since I know you won’t give up until I do, I might as well tell you. I told Millie I didn’t want anything more to do with her.”

Blake’s eyebrows shot upward. “Why would you do something like that? It’s plain even to a blind man that you and Millie are in love with each other.”

“That’s exactly why I told her to leave me. I can’t have her anywhere near me now that Gunner knows I’m alive. It won’t be long and he’ll find me.
